As summer fades, there is no better time to step outside and capture the first signs of fall on the canvas. En plein air, a French expression meaning "in the open air," is the practice of painting outdoors to capture nature as it unfolds before you. Each week the class meets at a new location where artist, Wes Sherman, offers guidance, feedback, and insights to support your creative process. You will learn to paint directly from nature, sharpen your observational skills, and explore what it means to be a contemporary landscape painter while fully engaging with your surroundings, your materials, and your own artistic vision.

Students are invited to work in either oil, acrylic or watercolor. Please bring whatever supplies you already have in the medium of your choice.

The first class will take place at Willowwood Arboretum in Chester, NJ. Specific meeting location details will be sent by the instructor via email.

Art From Your Start offers a personalized art exploration experience. Led by artist Barbara Guerriero-Flites, students share their inspiring images and collaboratively select a project aligned with their interests and goals. This course encourages students to develop work that highlights their individual style and creativity within a supportive, non-judgmental setting.

Students should bring a 16x 20 canvas, a set of acrylic paints, and a variety of brush in assorted sizes.

This class is perfect for artists who are comfortable with watercolor painting but still want some hands-on guidance with the medium. In this class, we'll explore using still life setups in the studio or at home, as well as photographs. Each session kicks off with a brief demo and some tips on color theory, composition, perspective, or specific techniques — or whatever topics the students are excited to explore. It’s a wonderful next step after Watercolor Exploration.

This unique painting class explores the ideas of metamodernism, a contemporary approach that embraces both sincerity and self awareness. Together we will examine how to care deeply about painting while remaining conscious of the rich history, traditions, and artifice that shape the medium. Through guided exercises and open studio time, students will strengthen their skills in drawing, surface, color, and composition while engaging with the emotional depth of their work. We will explore the creative “oscillations” that define metamodern painting, moving between hope and doubt, beauty and critique, skill and deconstruction. Discussions of art history and contemporary theory will support your studio practice, and thoughtful critique will focus on both technical development and conceptual clarity.

This class is ideal for artists who want to advance their craft while situating their work within today’s artistic landscape. Participants should have some prior painting experience.

With no formal instruction, you have the freedom to experiment, observe, and develop your work at your own pace. Register for the full four-week session to work from the same clothed live portrait model, giving you time to truly refine your skills, or drop in for any day that fits your schedule.

Portraiture with a Model is open to artists working in all mediums

Corvids are smarter than your average bird. They keep an eye on the neighborhood. And they're very graphic. That is, they're very striking on the page. Learn to create silhouettes of these canny creatures in different poses. Then paint a dead tree and populate it with a murder of crows. You'll discover that the birds are more colorful than they seem.
