The Artist's Sketchbook for Teens

Sketchbooks are an important artist's tool and wonderful place to express yourself visually. In this class we will combine foundational skills like life-drawing with expressive experiments like collage and even fan art. Whether you like painting, animation, or just love doodling in your notebooks, a sketchbook is a wonderful way to form good artistic habits and improve your work. Bring pencils, pens, and an open mind to try something new!

Sketchbooks and core materials will be provided by the Center. Students are welcome to bring any additional or preferred art materials they enjoy working with.

Advanced Ceramics

Under the guidance of sculptural ceramicist John Reinking, artists will work with refined hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques to deepen their studio practice and expand their creative range. Participants will explore the possibilities of the medium, clarify their artistic direction, and build a cohesive body of work. A rigorous and supportive critique forum encourages meaningful dialogue and fresh perspectives. Weekly readings enrich discussion and inspire thoughtful inquiry, creating a space for sustained growth and creative exploration.

Tuition includes the cost of class instruction, use of all studio equipment, glazes, and the firing of your in-class creations.

Clay purchases and tools are not included.

You will develop core skills such as likeness, color mixing, value, and edge control, building a strong foundation that will support all your future art projects.

Glaze Chemistry

This course instructs the student in the theory and practice of glaze chemistry and glaze formulation. This curriculum starts at the beginning and goes through the materials, heat, cones, temperature, chemistry, colorants, glaze flaws, and more! Students will learn how to formulate original glazes from glaze materials. Instruction will cover stoneware and porcelain glazes. Special glaze effects such as lusters, ceramic decals, underglazes and overglazes will also be discussed.

Portraiture with a Model Session 1

This student-moderated studio provides a relaxed, focused environment to practice in the medium of your choice. With no formal instruction, you have the freedom to experiment, observe, and develop your work at your own pace. Register for the full four-week session to work from the same clothed live portrait model, giving you time to truly refine your skills, or drop in for any day that fits your schedule.

Watercolor for Beginners

Pastels with Meg

Pastels have been used to create beautiful and bold color drawings throughout the centuries.  Learn about the different types of pastel and how to blend and layer pastel to get a soft haze or a sharp edge.  The instructor will demonstrate how to approach a pastel drawing through various stages, from the composition and getting the correct proportions and perspective, to understanding which colors to use to get the correct shade you are looking for.  We will be drawing from photographs for this class.  You can use your own photos or use the reference that the instructor will supply.
